Business Analysis 2.0 — The value of domain knowledge
Domain knowledge as described by Osada et. al. is the information about the business and the organization. Osada et. al. have emphasized on that fact that this is the most important element in the requirement elicitation process. The same paper highlights that incorrect or incomplete information about the business is detrimental to the requirement elicitation. While Osada et. al. have gone into depth of how to understand a problem domain is related, what are the key characteristics of the relationships and which metrics should be utilized for assessing the importance of domain knowledge in an elicitation activity. One cannot deny the fact, that success or failure of a project depends heavily on the experts who understand the current state of the business, the problems that are being faced and a few ideas around how these problems can be alleviated if not completely.
I want to make a claim that Domain knowledge will be the most important skill for business analyst in the next era of the Technology. Not just for requirement elicitation, which is one of the many responsibilities performed by Business analysts. It will be a key element of every successful project that the future business analysts be part of.
